Pitching Lab FAQ's

Wake Forest Pitching Lab Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear metal cleats?
Answer: Metal cleats aren’t only allowed but encouraged! Nobody knows what it's like throwing covered in markers better than us, we want you to be as comfortable pitching as possible, and a key component for this is wearing your game shoes.

How young is too young to attend the Wake Forest Pitching Lab (WFPL)?
Answer: Currently the pitching lab is open to athletes 12 years and older. We suggest you wait until your athlete is pitching from a regulation mound of 60’6” before attending a Wake Forest Pitching Lab Evaluation. We strongly suggest advanced pitchers (high school +) take advantage of our service due to the complexity of the information.

Following injury/surgery how far along in my rehabilitation should we wait before scheduling a WFPL evaluation?
Answer: First and foremost, please consult your Doctor before participating in a lab evaluation. We would like the athlete to be as close to “100% - in game effort” for the most accurate evaluation. We understand this is not achievable for all athletes even when they are healthy, but this would give us the best quality data.

When is the best time for us to schedule a pitching lab evaluation?
This depends on what competitive season you are in. We will be asking for 20-25 pitches during our pitching lab evaluation.

In-season: Schedule your lab appointment on your “bullpen day” allowing for at least two full days of recovery from last appearance and allowing for at least one full day before next appearance.

Off-season: Anytime, this is a great time to schedule your lab evaluation!
When preparing for the season, schedule a lab appointment when the athlete is ready to throw at least 30 pitches, including ALL off-speed pitches.

Deciding between pre-season or post-season? It does not matter! We will work with you to make your experience informative and enjoyable.
