Fastpitch Softball Evaluations

The Wake Forest Pitching Lab now offers Fastpitch Softball Evaluations for athletes who want a deeper understanding of how they move, how they generate power, and how they can continue to develop while staying healthy. Using advanced technology and a multidisciplinary approach, our staff captures the key details of each athlete’s delivery and physical profile to provide clear, individualized feedback.
Because fastpitch softball places unique demands on the body, this evaluation is built specifically around the underhand pitching motion.
The goal is to give athletes useful information they can take back to training, practice, and competition right away.

Evaluation Components
The fastpitch softball evaluation includes assessments and data reports from three key areas:
  1. Pitching Mechanics, Force Production, and Ball Flight
  2. Functional Movement and Mobility
  3. Baseline Strength and Physical Readiness

This combination of data helps identify movement patterns, physical limitations, and performance opportunities that may influence both efficiency and long-term health.

Collaborative Review Process
Our team uses a collaborative process to evaluate each athlete from multiple angles. Movement screening, mobility testing, strength assessment, and biomechanical analysis together create a more complete picture of the athlete. That information is then compiled into a report with individualized feedback and practical takeaways for future development.

Next Steps for Athletes
After the evaluation, athletes receive a detailed report with feedback and recommendations based on the results of their testing and biomechanical analysis. The goal is for each athlete to leave with information that is specific, understandable, and useful.
Athletes can then share the findings with their pitching coach, trainer, strength coach, or support team to help guide training and development moving forward.

Fastpitch softball evaluations are designed for athletes seeking objective feedback on mechanics, movement quality, and physical readiness, whether they are building toward higher-level competition or simply seeking a better understanding of their game.

Here’s what an assessment and evaluation looks like:

1. Total Body Movement Screen

Each athlete begins with a total-body screening to assess movement quality, control, coordination, and any limitations that may affect pitching mechanics. This helps us identify any restrictions or compensations that may interfere with efficient movement.

2. Mobility and Strength Testing
Athletes then go through targeted mobility and strength testing to better understand the physical qualities that support fastpitch performance. This may include hip and shoulder range of motion and other baseline measures that help us identify areas of strength and areas that may need attention.

3. Biomechanical Pitching Evaluation
During the throwing portion of the evaluation, our team records the athlete during a bullpen session using advanced motion capture technology and high-speed video. This gives us a more detailed view of how the athlete moves throughout the pitching delivery and helps link physical testing to on-field performance.

Evaluation Review Timeline
The Wake Forest Pitching Lab takes pride in delivering a detailed, individualized evaluation. Because each athlete receives feedback from multiple areas of the lab, please allow time for the full report to be finalized and returned with individualized feedback and recommendations.
